2017 Bordeaux: as the dust settles

2 Jul 2018

Campaign summary and wines available from stock

Fortunately, here in Exchange Arcade we didn't have high hopes for the 2017 primeurs campaign. In the wake of two great vintages with relatively successful campaigns, the '17s would have to be very attractively priced in order to enthuse customers. But Bordeaux proprietors don't have a history of giving their wines away after a couple of bumper years.

In the event, there were only a dozen or so wines which attracted any great depth of interest (our top 12 by volume and by value are listed below, in descending order). These were the wines deemed to represent fair value against comparable older vintages and/or the ones with strong emotional appeal. Beyond these, there are many big names where a (typical) token reduction on the 2016 release price simply wasn't enough to arouse any interest at all.

Top selling by volume: Lynch-Bages, Rauzan-Segla, Leoville-Barton, Canon, L'If, Carmes Haut-Brion, Feytit-Clinet, Vieux Certan, Calon-Segur, Lafon-Rochet, Leoville-Poyferre, Margaux

Top selling by value: Le Pin, Lynch-Bages, Lafite, Margaux, Vieux Certan, Mouton-Rothschild, L'If, Haut-Brion, Rauzan-Segla, Canon, Leoville-Barton, Carmes Haut-Brion

We're taking very little of the vintage to stock, limiting our selection to the most popular wines and - at the lower end of the scale - the most exceptional values. These wines are listed in the table below. /AR
