Perfect climate, low yields, intense wines
Over 100 years of winemaking and nearly 70 years at the forefront of New Zealand wine. The Brajkovich story is one of unrelenting hard work and enormous ability spanning four generations in their adopted country. The north island - and Kumeu River in particular - has proved to be one of the world's great hotspots for terrific Chardonnay. Their driven desire to make wine that is both popular and interesting has made them the equals of many in Burgundy and anyone in California while providing unequalled value and drinking pleasure.
At Kumeu, with yields always tightly controlled in favour of quality, the fruit intensity in the 2016s we tasted last year was as focussed as ever and the terroir definition between the various vineyards as distinct as you would hope. Everyone has their favourite Kumeu and Hunting Hill continues to be mine, though the Coddington and Maté have huge fan clubs too. The estate Chardonnay continues as one of the wine world's real bargains. Global demand for these wines continues to grow, so don't be shy if you would like to secure immense drinking pleasure over the next few years. /CW
