2014 Burgundy: Cote Chalonnaise

Look here for top growers and terroirs and values...

Cote Chalonnaise should never be an afterthought, save only that in this sleepy region not every producer is aware of the British Burgundy en primeur calendar. Vincent Dureuil-Janthial is waiting until after bottling before offering his wines, so we will have those later.

Francois and Isabelle Lumpp run a self-made Domaine (the finest in Givry) that continues to surprise us on every visit with the progress they make. The wines gain density and complexity with every vintage as the vines age. This is a treat for everyone's cellar and I don't think any true Burgundy lover would ignore a Domaine such as this. In 2014 they outperformed many of their more highly exalted peers up in the Cote d'Or with sublime whites and rich reds.

Then we come to Marie and father Paul Jacqueson. As a team in what to us are still the new cellars on the hill in Rully, they fully exploited the potential in 2014 to make brilliant whites and very good reds. Their wines are fine and elegant. /CW
