2013 Rochioli: Northern Californian wines to thrill

8 Oct 2015

Rochioli Vineyards

'This enviable iconic winery in the heart of the Russian River Valley, has a long, justifiable and hard-earned reputation for impeccable quality as well as grape growing. It is always a thrill to taste the wines from Tom Rochioli.' - Robert Parker, December 2014

Rochioli possess some of the best vineyards in Sonoma County's Russian River Valley. Couple that with their respect for the terroir, diversity of the sites they own, plus minimal intervention - 'Don't touch those barrels unless you need to. Don't fiddle with what the vineyard has already given you' - it's no wonder that demand for these wines is universal.

Rochioli is a classic, all-American story of humble roots, aspiration and achievement. The Rochioli family arrived in the Russian River Valley in 1911 as emigrants from Tuscany, and began working as farm labourers. By the 50s they were able to purchase the estate they were working, and made their reputation as growers. But it wasn't until the 80s that third generation Tom Rochioli realised they were producing such good grapes going into such great wine that it was time they produced their own wines, under the Rochioli name. Nowadays if you are a winemaker who wants to buy some Rochioli grapes for your own wines, you have to audition just to join the waiting list. /NT
