Elvio Cogno Barolo: location, location, location

The legacy continues; great wines from a top vintage

Elvio Cogno was a respected force in Barolo for nearly thirty years, working for Marcarini prior to founding his eponymous estate. He bought vineyards extremely wisely, as you would expect from someone who had already been in the vines since childhood. For some years the estate has been managed by son-in-law Walter Fissore and the high reputation that Elvio Cogno enjoys is as much Walter's as it is Elvio's legacy.

The Cogno winery is located in Novello, not one of the obvious communes but one with grand cru quality vineyards. The Cogno style is far away from the lean and austere image that Barolo sometimes shows - these are luscious, rich wines of pleasure. They still require a little age to develop into their full potential but while displaying all the structure for which Barolo is renowned they are delicious with depth and presence.

The 2013s are testament to Walter Fissore's hard work in the vineyard, especially early in the season. The year started wet and all treatments had to be walked through the vineyards, slowly and laboriously. Any mechanical or even equine assistance was impossible. They took full advantage of the fine weather late in the season to harvest fully ripe and perfectly mature fruit to make complex and long lasting wines. They are also extremely good value for money. /CW
