2011 Cos d'Estournel, Gazin en primeur

18 Apr 2012

Some interesting analysis on Liv-ex yesterday afternoon. As I suggested at the time, Monday's release of Lafite has been finding buyers, and Liv-ex believe that this is due to it being positioned at least 10% below the cheapest physical vintage. They then calculate the London release prices (per 12x75cl) required for the other firsts to follow the same rule, and ensure a favourable response in the market:

Haut-Brion £2,365
Margaux £2,475
Mouton £2,475
Latour £3,330

Fingers crossed!

Alas, Jean-Guillaume Prats has not followed the same formula. We can wax lyrical about its classical proportions but it won't matter a jot. Despite a pricing "error" by one broker trying to steal a march this morning, 2011 Cos d'Estournel emerges from its stunning cellar at a price considerably higher than comparable vintages. Nuff said.

The softly spoken Nicolas de Bailliencourt is the man responsible for the transformation of Gazin over the past two decades. From the Pomerol plateau - home to the appellation's most exalted names - Gazin offers a taste of the best at a fraction of the price. Nicolas told us that the 2011 price would be 10 to 20% below the (very reasonable) 2010; he's been true to his word. /AR

'Gazin is today a must-know estate for fans of Pomerol, turning out exceptionally good wines, but without the grand or downright exorbitant prices that some leading right bank properties command.' - thewinedoctor.com
