From two sites, one in Elgin and one in Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge, both on shale soils which have broken down into an iron-rich clay. Deeper, richer, with darker fruit than its sandstone stablemate, with a very supple palate. Very pure and lifted, despite the dark fruit character; finishes on a savoury, spicy note. (JH 24/04/2025)

Two types of clay, in Elgin and the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge, contribute to this impressive Pinot Noir, made with a mixture of the 115 and 777 Burgundy clones. Weightier and more powerful than the sandstone bottling, this is smooth and opulent, with plum, tomato leaf and black cherry fruit and savoury, granular tannins. 94 points
