Here is a generous, open-knit Chardonnay with stone fruit, toasted nut and a thin veil of crushed stone. The DeMorgenzon 2020 Stellenbosch Reserve Chardonnay reveals a rich, waxy style with apple cobbler and poached pear at its core. This Reserve shows a horizontal approach and perhaps lacks the high notes that we saw in the other whites from this producer. Fruit is sourced from across several parcels, and each is fermented separately. Some 25% of the fruit is whole bunch. The wine ferments in both stainless steel (with no malolactic fermentation) and oak, where it completes a second fermentation. It matures in barrel for eight months with 20% new oak. This is an 8,000-bottle release. 91 points

The 2020 Chardonnay DeMorgenzon Reserve comes from two blocks behind the winery and sees around 30% new oak for around 9 to 10 months on the gross lees with another three months in foudres and used oak/tank. It has an attractive nose with orange blossom, hazelnut and light spicy notes. The palate is very balanced with a lovely texture, a nice `bite` of acidity, taut and fresh with a saline finish that lingers. A wonderful Chardonnay. 94 points
