2019 Lukas van Loggerenberg Breton Cab Franc

Stellenbosch
The Loire Valley influence is certainly evident here, but also no shortage of South African `garrigue`, a capsicum/rooibos tea character from the fynbos which surrounds the vineyards, which can take you by surprise when you first open the bottle. There`s a lovely weight, though, to the savoury red fruit- cranberry, cherry and strawberry - and the overall effect is a really complex, giving wine. The finish is long, with fine, dusty tannin; this is delicious now, but I suspect that, like Loire Cabernet Franc, it will age extraordinarily well. (JH 09/04/22)

Tim Atkin MW

Loire Valley fan Lukas van Loggerenberg makes this brilliant Cabernet Franc from three sites, two on ferricrete and one on granite soils. Fermented with 65% whole bunches, it`s a beautifully judged, refined wine with lovely sap, freshness and crisp, black and red cherry fruit and a graphite top note. Drink 2021-27. 95 points

The 2019 Breton comprises 100% Cabernet Franc with 65% whole-bunch ferment, aged in used oak. The compelling bouquet of cedar- and tobacco-infused black fruit is very intense and beautifully defined. The medium-bodied palate is fresh and vibrant, with grainy tannins, tobacco, sage and white pepper on the finish. Alongside Raats, this is one of the Cape`s finest exemplars of the grape variety. 94 points

Pure, herbal-tinged aromas on 2019 cab franc; intense, balanced & fresh, with succulent grape tannins. Lack of new oak aids early appeal, but it will age. Dry & lingering, fruit-rich & that herbal freshness. Lighter style than most locals - Loire rather than Bordeaux inspiration. 13.6% alcohol. 93 points
