2018 Taupenot-Merme Morey-St-Denis Riotte

This superb premier cru sits just below the Clos St-Denis, and is easily accessed from a gate just below the centre of Morey-St-Denis. It follows the slope till it flattens out, on the same limestone and clay soils as Mazoyeres, and doesn’t suffer hydric stress easily – even in hot, dry summer 2019 the leaves here didn’t turn yellow. A dense bouquet that has more register than the already very fine village wines from the domaine. Powerful, full and coiled in the mouth, lifted by acidity, with a very fine finish. A real cellar wine. (NT 12/11/19)

Bright crimson to purple. Quite a stern nose after succulent Chambolle, and with darker fruit. Very nicely balanced on the palate, dark cherry with a drier finish, middleweight, subdued tannins, could be livelier. Rich clay soil. 90-93 points

The 2018 Morey-Saint-Denis La Riotte 1er Cru has a taut, well-defined bouquet, blackberry, sous-bois and light cedar aromas bubbling up in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned tannins and quite sappy, revealing a delicate touch of black pepper toward the finish. Good length here, and a very competent La Riotte. Excellent. This comes recommended. 91-93 points

The 2018 la Riotte is another pretty ripe wine, coming in at 13.7 percent, but it is quite a tasty example of the riper side of the vintage. The bouquet is quite wide open and complex, offering up scents of red and black cherries, coffee grounds, gamebird, dark soil tones, mustard seed, cedar and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and tangy, with a good core of fruit, ripe tannins and a bit of backend heat belying its vintage origins on the long finish. This is not likely to make particularly old bones by the premier cru standards of the domaine, but will provide a good, ripe bottle during its heyday. Drink 2027-2055+. 90+ points

A mentholated top note can be found on the slightly fresh aromas of violet, red berry liqueur, rose petal and earth. Once again the middle weight flavors possess a lovely mouthfeel that presently contrasts somewhat with the firm, dusty and slightly grippy finish. I like the depth and persistence though this will need more extended patience to round off the slightly edgy tannins. 89-92 points

Tank sample. Inviting Morey aroma that has the perfume of Chambolle and a more peppery darkness of its other neighbour. Super-fine tannins giving elegant structure. Tight, extremely dry but all in harmony. 17 points
