2018 Taupenot-Merme Gevrey-Chambertin

A more savoury style, that feels destined to get meatier with age. Succulent red fruits are backed up by firm but very silky tannins, with slightly herbal, earthy notes and a hint of cedar appearing on the finish. A blend from Les Seuvrees, La Justice, and the village section of Bel-Air – so three very differently situated village plots all, according to Romain, with something very different to bring. The vines average 45 years old. A refined, elegant finish. All Romain’s village wines have performed very well in 2018, and this is no exception. (NT 12/11/19)

Fine bright mid purple, dark fruit on the nose, quite concentrated, sweet red fruit on the palate, easy-going finish though with just a few welcome ripe tannins to maintain the balance. 89-92 points

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Village offers slightly smudged red fruit on the nose, earthier than the domaine’s village crus and perhaps without the same level of complexity. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, good acidity, gentle grip and a touch of black pepper toward the finish. This actually bunches the quality toward the end of the wine; hopefully the aromatics will liven up in bottle. 87-89 points

The 2018 Gevrey AC here is more red fruity than the Morey, and though not marked by notes of sur maturité, there is a confiture aspect to its fruit expression that shows it got plenty ripe. The nose delivers scents of baked strawberries and cherries, mustard seed, a good base of soil, woodsmoke and just a bit of cedar in the upper register. On the palate the wine is fullbodied, surprisingly transparent in personality and quite easy-going structurally, with a good core, moderate (slightly dry-edged) tannins and good length and grip on the jammy finish. This is a good, solid effort, but one can tell it was picked towards the end of the harvest. Drink 2026-2055. 88+ points

A different aromatic profile presents much more forest floor and sauvage-infused aromas of red currant and poached plum. The rich, caressing and suave medium weight flavors are shaped by slightly riper tannins on the better balanced finale. This is quite good though note that it is a firmly structured and ageworthy Gevrey villages. 89-91 points

What a delightfully pure nose, slight hint of perfume but with bags of freshness and fruit. A nice lick of oak but it frames the wine very well, it finishes very clean and fresh and with a hint of sweet oak. 16.5+ points
