If you’re looking for Nebbiolo but without the Piedmont price tag, then Lombardy is your friend and the long, narrow valley of Valtellina is producing some stunning examples. Mattia Franzina’s Valtellina Superiore St Sixtus (named after a chapel on the peak above) has an expressive nose full of rose petal, cassis and black tea. Medium bodied with juicy red fruits and a pure, delicate and refined finish. Bravo Mattia! (04/05/21 ZA)

Walter Speller
100% Chiavennasca. 20% of the grapes were dried for a brief period before vinification. Aged in stainless steel and oak barrel. Mid ruby with orange tinges. Beautiful nose of savoury red fruit with a hint of tobacco and garden herbs and an undertow of black pepper. Cranberry and raspberry palate with satin tannins. Long and building up in concentration on the finish. 17++ points
