Jane Anson

This feels closed in and confident but is not giving much away. It has a silky texture with firm and bristling tannins - you can feel the latent power, pretty much in line with 2010 or 2016 in terms of its construction. Liquorice and dark chocolate are joined by freshly cut herbs and black pepper notes. Great stuff. The winemaker is Stephen Carrier, with no consultant used. 94 points

Barrel sample. Black core, purple rim. Very ripe fruit – damson and black plum. Lots of oak and spice. Chewy and rich, full-on fruit but a bit flat on the finish. 16 points

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 de Fieuzal rocks up with gregarious scents of baked plums, stewed cherries and dried mulberries plus suggestions of Chinese five spice, unsmoked cigars and sautéed herbs. The rich, full-bodied palate has loads of exotic spice and raisin cake layers with a firm, chewy frame, finishing just a little hard. 91-93 points

This has a nose of very dark confit summer fruits, most notably baked strawberry and cherry, all wrapped in sweet vanillin oak. The palate feels lightly paradoxical, showing these baked red summer fruits, here reminiscent of spicy wild plum and raspberry, but they come wrapped up in a rather moderate texture, all underpinned by piles of firm grip. A barrel sample loaded with tannin and structure, more than the somewhat introverted substance of the wine deserves I think, right through to the finish which is rich in grip. Tasted twice. 90-92 points
