2018 Carbonnieux Rouge (Pessac-Leognan)

Media Reviews

Jane Anson

Right off the first nose you just want to sink right into this wine. It`s a clear success in this vintage: delicious, with a great texture and a slight bitterness on the finish perfectly balanced by the sweet ripeness of the fruit. Thoroughly enjoyable. 40% new oak. 33hl/ha. 94 points

Julia Harding

60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot; 40% new oak. Black core, purple rim. Rich in dark fruit and lightly floral. Fragrant. Chalky/chewy texture but manages to finish with a lighter touch. A bit abrupt on the finish. A bit hard. 15.5 points

Lisa Perrotti-Brown

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Carbonnieux leaps from the glass with vibrant notes of baked blackberries, warm cassis, preserved plum and lavender with touches of Indian spices, forest floor and dried sage. Full-bodied, firm and grainy, the generous fruit has loads of bright, vibrant sparks plus a great line of freshness, finishing mineral tinged. 91-93 points

Antonio Galloni

The 2018 Carbonnieux is a deep, powerful wine. Black cherry, scorched earth, licorice, tobacco and menthol add to an impression of gravitas in this brooding, potent Pessac Léognan red. The 2018 is rustic and a bit rough around the edges, but certainly not lacking in character. 89-92 points

A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot, picked at a yield of 33 hl/ha. The alcohol is 14%. This starts off like it means business, with perfumed black cherry and damson fruit, wrapped up in coffee bean and dark chocolate. The palate is heavily wrapped in oak, but underneath there is a medium-bodied substance, rich in smoky blackcurrant and damson fruits, although right now it is swamped by coffee bean, cigar box, tobacco and other oaky aromas. Beautifully poised, fresh, silky and elegant, with lovely perfumed fruit for Carbonnieux, as well as a sinewy substance and lots of build, it certainly has attractive potential. Very well done. Tasted twice. The élevage will be in 40% new oak and 30% second-fill oak, the remainder presumably older barrels. 93-95 points
