(only 10% new oak). Green-tinged yellow. Pungent aromas of pear skin, Meyer lemon, iodine and white flowers, with a hint of anise in the background. Rich and broad but focused thanks to a spine of acidity that lifts the powerful orchard fruit and floral flavors. The mineral quality repeats on the firm, gripping, very long finish. Surprisingly lithe for its richness, with the balance to age. 91 points

Readers looking for a seductive, tropical fruit-styled white wine with a whiff of Burgundy should check our Freeman’s 2012 Chardonnay Ryo-Fu. It offers lots of tropical fruits along with good acidity, a medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, and a judicious touch of oak. This full-flavored, outstanding Chardonnay should be consumed over the next 2-3 years. 91 points
