2015 marks 60 years for the Binder family business, since Austrian Rolf emigrated to Australia with his Hungarian wife Franziska. Grape picking to make ends meet led to winemaking, and the Binder winery. In the 60s, they discovered some exceptional old vine Shiraz, Grenache and Mataro (aka Mourvedre) vines - the classic southern Rhone blend. The winery is now managed by Rolf Junior and sister Christa, and the Heinrich is made from those vines as a homage to their father, Rolf Heinrich Binder. (NT 20/08/15)

Composed of Shiraz 60%, Mataro 25% and Grenache 15%, the 2010 Heinrich Shiraz Mataro Grenache has a medium to deep garnet color and exudes aromas of dried mulberries and red plum preserves with hints of Provencal herbs, black and white pepper and dusty earth. It is a highly structured style of wine with a firm foundation of grainy tannins and very crisp acid freshness to frame muscular fruit flavors through a very good, persistent finish. Drink it now to 2017+. 88 points
