Rolf Binder
Rolf`s Mum & Dad started the family wine business in 1955, and his mum is still helping out. Rolf started working with his Dad as soon as he finished Roseworhy in 1982, and he now has a new winery and a clutch of 90+ Parker scores. He also has the recognition of his peers, being awarded the Barossa Winemaker of the Year, 2005, jointly with his sister.
Sister Christa is very involved, making the cool climate and restrained Riesling apart from anything else. For an Australian, Rolf is almost as restrained as his wines are, though not lacking any character, and certainly not lacking in the forthrightness department. Still youthful in appearance, Rolf is able to chart the many changes in the industry over the last thirty five years, including a big swing to much more sustainable viticulture. You can also expect to see some slightly lower alcohol levels on his labels, though the wines themselves still have plenty of guts. (CW 21/10/10)
