2010 Gramercy Tempranillo Inigo Montoya

Media Reviews

David Schildknecht

The Gramercy 2010 Tempranillo Inigo Montoya showcases a grape Harrington has come to think of as a `prodigal son` in his cellar and as offering outstanding potential in Walla Walla generally, despite its as yet diminutive acreage – acreage that includes 11 year old vines on what has become one of Gramercy’s estate vineyards. `Originally, we figured we’d end up ripping those vines out,` he remarks, `but by the time it came to do that, we realized that we really liked the (first) wine,` and now the plan is to expand even at the expense of some Syrah. Cepage-typical cigar ash along with toasted walnut, mulberry, and huckleberry headline a pungent and piquant performance, set-off by density of palpable extract and somewhat grainy tannin. There is an as yet somewhat detached finishing tartness, which at the same time, though, helps overcome any slight drying effect of the tannins by serving to get one’s saliva flowing. This won’t be released until early next year and ought to be fascinating to follow for at least half a decade. 88 points

(blended with 10% syrah) Ruby-red. Lovely aromatic nose and palate combine cherry and coffee elements. Juicy, ripe and intense, with clearcut varietal character and excellent tannic spine. Finishes ripe and long. `Two thousand ten was our first true European-style vintage, with the flavors coming before the sugars,` noted proprietor Greg Harrington. 91 points
