Attractive red fruit and floral notes in this fresh, silky, balanced wine. Not as voluminous as it has been over the last couple of vintages, but vital and elegant. Jean-Antoine Nony explained how over the last decade they have been planting more Cabernet Franc, with the ultimate aim being to return to the higher proportions of Cabernet Franc here in the 1950s and 60s. Cabernet Franc is both better adapted to climate change and more resistant to mildew (as a thicker-skinned variety) than Merlot, so it is well-adapted to our times. The Cabernet Franc is evident here as a darker note of cassis and pepper among the plum and cherry. Structured, stylish, delicious. (NT 27/05/22)

William Kelley
The 2021 Grand Mayne is a success, unwinding in the glass with aromas of cherries, blackberries, sweet soil tones and creamy new oak. Medium to full-bodied, lively and supple, with a fleshy core of fruit, ripe tannins and succulent acids, it represents a strong performance. Tasted three times. 90-91 points

The 2021 Grand Mayne has a pure, sensual bouquet of perfumed red and blue fruit, quite floral in style. The oak is nicely integrated here. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit and fine tannins, and quite mineral-driven, leading to a poised, persistent finish. This is another excellent wine from Jean-Antoine and Damien Nony. 92-94 points

The 2021 Grand Mayne is a standout. It offers a beguiling mix of deep, plush fruit and more nervy tension that is such a signature of the year. Red berry fruit, chalk, blood orange, mocha, mint and white pepper all race across the palate. Grand Mayne was brilliant in two tastings. I hope I am not underrating it. 91-93 points

Here is a wine where the touch of smoked oak does a good job of filling out the mid palate, clear clove and tar, 50% new oak 33hl/h yield. Abrupt on the finish, a little austere, but there is careful extraction and a sense of precision. Tasted twice. 90 points
