Not a vatfull of black olives like the 2014 vintage, but quite fruit driven, full of elusive touches of caramel and chocolate, carob and cola. The grapes this is fermented from may get the full force of the South African sun, but they are also high altitude enough to get a dusting of snow in winter, and that comes across in the freshness of the wine which plays against and complements the ripe fruit. This is sure to get more interesting over the next couple of years as secondaries start to come to the fore. (NT 02/09/16)

If the 2014 Lismore Syrah was noteworthy - the 2012 and 2013 were not released - then this is even better. Deeply coloured and highly perfumed, with stony, granitic, liquorice, black pepper and tapenade notes, complemented by fynbos aromas, granular tannins, subtle oak and pithy acidity. Exceptional winemaking. Drink. 2017-25. 95 points
