2007 Haut-Batailley (Pauillac)

Part of the Borie empire, and until 2003 run by Francois-Xavier, who now concentrates his efforts here and at Grand-Puy-Lacoste, having left brother Bruno in charge of Ducru. With part of the estate adjacent to Chateau Latour, the situation is very good, and the vineyards themselves are densely planted to two thirds Cabernet Sauvignon and one third Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Fermentation is in stainless steel, they haven`t yet followed the fashion for oak vats, and use of new oak in the maturation cellar is moderate at around one third fresh barrels every year.

Tasted at BI Wine & Spirits` 10-Years-On tasting, the 2007 Haut Batailley actually had a very similar bouquet to the Batailley, though there is more red fruit here with a subtle scent of Tuscan delicatessen emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin, a pleasant chewiness on the entry, solid and armed with commendable presence, even with some sinew on the finish. Sure, it is a bit rough around the edges, though it is probably the best example of this particular wine that I have tasted. 89 points
