Triennes: Provençale soul; Burgundian spirit

There can't be many collaborations between winegrowers as illustrious as the Seysses family (Dujac) and Aubert de Villaine (DRC). Both partners are trustees of some of the best land in Burgundy and make stunning wines there. The genesis of Triennes is not exactly shrouded in mystery but I like to think that a couple of jolly good dinners must have been involved. The third partner is an old friend of theirs from Paris. The estate's name Triennes references both the tri-annual festival of Bacchus that used to happen in this area and the tripartite nature of the ownership.

The results are a trio of beautifully balanced and fresh wines that are both entirely appropriate for the current warmth and will also see you through all of our seasons. Their Provence vineyards are on south-facing, sloping land of clay and limestone, so ideal terroir in this area and very familiar to the Burgundians. Their first thought on acquiring the land was to renew the vineyards and many vines were dug up to be replaced with vines and rootstocks much better suited to the soils and underlying rock. It is this aspect of Triennes that has seen the biggest investments, with much more care taken in the vineyards than the previous owners were able to manage. Conversion to organics is also underway with certification expected this year.

The 2012 Auréliens is a lovely, full-flavoured and mature red, while the Auréliens Blanc is a fresh white with a rich stone fruit character. Both of these are delicious but we expect it is the rosé that will be most popular. In its understated packaging it is easily the equal of more glamorous Notting Hill/marina rosés. Fresh and juicy with redcurrant fruit and a great finish it will adorn your terrace as well as your dining table, your picnic in the park or your barbecue. /CW

Chateau Goubau: Bordeaux's highest achievement?

Triennes wines all punch well above their price point so we think they won't mind the inclusion of our best selling Chateau Goubau in this tasting. From yesterday's offer we thought it would be daft not to show them as well today.

Goubau sits on one of the most advantageous (and highest) sites on the right bank. For instance it completely escaped the devasting frosts in both 2016 and 17. This aspect is one of the reasons that organics works so well here. As the vineyards are so exposed and swept by winds everything dries quickly after rain and there is much less need to treat against rot. The Goubau family always wanted to respect the environment and living among the vines ere very keen that the use of chemicals was virtually eliminated.
