Situated within six miles of the Slovenian border, Le Due Terre has to be the most literally named wine estate I can think of. Due Terre and two kinds of soil across its 5 hectares. The soils in question are ponca, a rich marl good for most of the local red varieties like Refosco and Schiopettino. The other has more clay, better for Merlot and Pinot Noir. Unusually for a Friuli estate the main focus here is on reds, but they do produce vibrant whites too. The estate was founded in 1984 by Flavio Basilicata and his wife Silvana Forte and their daughter Cora is gradually assuming responsibility. The family farms biodynamically and whatever you think of that regime, the wines are pure and vivid. This quality also partly stems from their use of stainless steel and concrete as fermentation mediums and a very limited use of new oak for maturation. The wines age beautifully and develop slowly. If you are a lover of Friuli wines this is one to try. (CW 10/10/18)
