Although we buy our wines based on a not-too-complex formula of quality and price, Casa Agrícola Roboredo Madeira, serendipitously ticks a few of our other boxes. family ownership, having been continuously in the same family since the mid 17th Century, and being certified organic is a bonus too. Located in the Douro Valley, CARM`s land holdings are dominated by 220 hectares of olive groves, with only 62 hectares of vines. Of course it could have been worse. The Quinta do Coa vineyard was planted in 1966 in the heart of the Coa Valley, which was the one the government wanted to dam and flood in 1992, only to find Europe`s largest excavation of paleolithic rock art, so it`s now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. And thankfully, still a vineyard. Surprisingly, CARM doesn`t produce any Port- only still wines- so you can be assured we are getting the best juice possible, and hence the best wines. (PG 13/11/08)
