Domaine Tempier

Masters of Mourvèdre

2010 is as stunning a vintage in Provence as in most French regions. Domaine Tempier, in the more than capable hands of Daniel Ravier, has been going from strength to strength. The 2010 reds are packed with ripe fruit, have suave tannins and that signature 2010 freshness. The Cuvée Classique will drink beautifully young - if treated to some air and a few slices of roast lamb, while the Cabassaou, Migoua and Tourtine cry out for time in the cellar to develop their characteristic smoky, rich flavours.

Tempier is on a particular patch of terraced limestone and clay overlooking the Mediterranean. This gives the vines the basis to produce fabulous fruit. The sea view is essential for the 80% Mourvedre as it needs a lot of light to ripen successfully, and the clear skies and reflection from the water achieves that nicely. Much of the Mourvedre itself comes from cuttings taken at Chateau Beaucastel.

This is a superstar estate with the elegance, complexity and structure of a great Pauillac, but the flavours and aromas of the south. In addition to the 2010 reds, we have a small amount of the delicious 2012 rosé for late summer - holiday nostalgia drinking. /CW
