It's a bit later than usual in the annual Uncorked calendar for us to be sending out a Zind Humbrecht pre-shipment offer and tasting invitation. Blame it on the curious case of the exceptionally slow-fermenting 2014 Rieslings. These have only recently been bottled, but are exceptional and well worth the wait. An unusually long fermentation also means little residual sugar - you'll see from the indice numbers (1=dry, 5=sweet) the wines are dry this year.
2014 was unusual in other ways. There's little Gewurztraminer. Some weather patterns were a bit topsy-turvy, with a mild, dry winter, a dry spring, early flowering, and a torrential July. A precocious start to the season often means low acidity, but at this point a cool August stepped in to keep acidity fresh. Finally a warm September rounded things off nicely for the harvest.
We're delighted to be welcoming Olivier Humbrecht back to Uncorked for his annual tasting. Erudite and engaging, charming and informative, Olivier is always great company and I defy anyone not to learn something on an evening spent in his company. He'll guide us through a tasting of his 2014s, and answer any questions you care to throw at him about the vintage, Alsace or his winemaking. Join us for what promises to be a fascinating evening.
