Domaine Jones - an Englishwoman in the Languedoc
Having started off working for a British wine merchant, Katie Jones was persuaded to join the dark side of the trade and worked in a co-op in Mont Tauch. A village in Fitou, it is one of the impoverished areas of the Languedoc most notorious for its contribution to the wine lake, when there was such a thing. For most landowners in the region a basic income from that co-op, deploying chemical, by-numbers winegrowing is the best they can expect.
Katie then found herself in possession of a few vines and things went from there. She only buys old vines in brilliant and rugged terroirs and she farms them organically. She's been very successful and you'll see why when you come and taste. This is La France Profonde and some of her neighbours can't see the wood for the trees and jealousy occasionally rules. But she has many friends in the area and hopefully her pioneering spirit will help raise the area.
