While Chianti may have greater household recognition, Sangiovese arguably reaches its pinnacle a little further south, in the hills of Montalcino. Despite its relative youth as an appellation and a rocky recent history, Montalcino frequently makes Tuscany's most striking and aromatic Sangiovese wines, blessed with a superior local clone of the grape (the eponymous Brunello, or Sangiovese Grosso) . At its best, Brunello can be one of Italy's most ageworthy reds, with five years minimum maturation before release mandated by its brutally strict ageing rules.
We'll explore the diversity of styles within Montalcino, from luminous and pure examples from producers such as Poggio di Sotto and Il Marroneto, through to richer, weightier wines from Salicutti and Casanova di Neri. A dream evening for lovers of Italian reds — don't miss it!
