Walter Speller
Arch traditionalist who still uses concrete tanks from the 1960s without temperature control. Vineyards on granite soils of volcanic origin. Youthful crimson ruby. Great depth of marasca cherry on the nose with savoury-minerally hints. Recognisably Nebbiolo but really distinct from Barolo or Barbaresco. More of an alpine character combined with the concentration of the very warm and dry 2017 vintage. Just a hint of herbs and then concentrated cherry fruit with marzipan-like tannins adding great grip to the finish. Can be approached now but ideally should get more time in the bottle. Great bargain compared with Barolo. 17++ points
