2017 Burgundy en primeur: six top picks

13 Feb 2019

A few of our favourites from the delicious 2017 Burgundies

Electric whites, and sweet, succulent reds - the 2017 Burgundy vintage has brought us some delightful, seductive wines. But we understand that on long lists of en primeur offerings it can sometimes be hard to see the wood for the trees. So we've put together a short selection of what we think are some top buys from the vintage - not only do we think these represent exceptional value for money, they are also classic expressions of their home villages. /NT

THE WHITES

Benoit Droin Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons 6x75cl £126 ib
La Revue du Vin de France (the definitive French wine guide) lists Droin next to Dauvissat and Raveneau as among the top 3 Chablis producers. His 2017 Vaillons is an utterly refined Chablis, green apple and nutmeg, finely balancing fruit and acidity.

Francois Lumpp Givry Blanc 1er Cru Crausot 6x75cl £135 ib

From the other extreme of Burgundy, the village of Givry down in the south, where Francois Lumpp has developed his domaine around the top premier cru sites in the village. A waxy and intense wine, graceful, persistent and rounded off with a touch of oak.

Bernard Moreau Chassagne-Montrachet 6x75cl £195 ib
Bright and glittering, tense, electric and focussed, with classic Chassagne fruit, this a great bottle from brothers Alex and Benoit Moreau. Lovely now, but will also gain depth if left alone for a year or two.

THE REDS

Felettig Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes 6x75cl £195 ib
Delightful, delicate cherry fruit, very Chambolle. Partly new oak, very deftly integrated. The old vine fruit (vines are between 40 and 60 years old) brings an extra layer of depth. There's a surprising amount of structure here and this wine will have a long future.

Meo-Camuzet Morey-St-Denis F&S 6x75cl £210 ib
Dark fruit with very classic Morey sandalwood and spice. Meo-Camuzet is one of the most celebrated domaines in all of the Cote d'Or, and the quality across the range is extremely high.

Berthaut-Gerbet Vosne-Romanee 6x75cl £225 ib
It's not often the wines of Berthaut-Gerbet make it through the allocation process, so jump on this before it sells out! Amelie Berthaut has not been at the helm for long, but she is already making big waves. This bottling is full of classically dark, silky Vosne fruit with just a hint of Asian spice.
