Sandwiched between Clos de la Roche just over the border in Morey and Gevrey grand crus on the north side, one wonders why Combottes isn’t classified as a grand cru in its own right; there is a theory that politics played a part, or it may be because Combottes lies in a small dip compared to its neighbours. Either way, in the hands of a producer such as Arlaud, it can make some exceptionally fine wine. The bouquet is immediately striking here for its grandeur, serious rather than hedonistic, but attention-grabbing. The wine is tense with energy but composed, powerful, but in check. There is something here that makes me think of river cobble, perhaps the smell of petrichor. (NT 12/12/24)

The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Combottes 1er Cru offers a wonderful bouquet with intense raspberry and wild strawberry scents bursting from the glass, with 30-50% whole bunch seamlessly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannins and a crisp line of acidity. It is quite pure and poised, delivering more structure and grip on the finish compared to other Premier Crus from Cyprien Arlaud. Probably on par with the excellent 2022. 93-95 points

One of the slightly paler crimson ruby colours. Class and elegance on the nose. Superbly gracious across both nose and palate, strawberry and raspberry together, a really delicious texture, and a beautifully precise yet smooth follow through. A fabulous example. Very persistent indeed. 93-96 points
