2018 Ronsel do Sil Vel`Uveyra Mencia

Ribeira Sacra
85% Mencia, 10% Garnacha, 5% Mouratón
Ribeira Sacra (`Sacred River Bank`) is a DO defined by its twisting river valleys and precipitous, vineyard-lined river banks. In Galician vernacular Vel`Uveyra means `gaze at the vineyard`, and Ronsel do Sil`s vineyards are on an impressively steep river bank where the terraces were originally laid out by the Romans. Peppery, red-fruited and floral, with an intriguing backnote of earth and smoke, this light-bodied but aromatically complex wine is a beautiful expression of the Mencia grape variety. (NT 14/06/21)

The first Mencía 2018 Vel`uveyra Mencia in reality contains 10% Garnacha Tintorera and 5% Mouraton, two somewhat rustic grapes that might have given it a slightly different profile. It matured in 500-liter oak barrels for eight months and has a creamy texture and some spicy and smoky notes. It`s medium-bodied, with some dusty tannins and a dry finish. 24,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2019. 89 points
