Chateau Palmer is one of the select band of super-second properties in the Haut-Medoc. The current managing director is Thomas Duroux, who - most unBordeaux-like - turned up to his first interview in jeans, because he didn't think he stood a chance. He was then winemaker at Ornellaia. 2004 was his first vintage at Palmer and the estate hasn't looked back, now being entirely biodynamically farmed and producing wine after wine of quality, the result of big investments in vineyard and chai.

The estate itself had equally unconventional beginnings, more or less pioneering the idea of winegrowing in the Margaux commune in 1814. At that time the land was acquired by General Palmer who apparently bought it from the recently widowed Madame de Ferriere during a coach journey to Paris. Palmer was a swashbuckling young officer who'd made his name in the Napoleonic wars: after a couple of days in close proximity the property was his. His plantings set the trend for the Chateau.

We'll be tasting the following vintages, which include the Palmer Historical XIXth Century Wine 2006, a blend with Syrah, a nod back to the time when you could pay extra to have your claret 'Hermitaged'. Christopher Myer from Palmer will host our tasting and his intimate knowledge of estate and wines will enhance your evening. /CW

The vintages on show are 1996, 1999, 2000, 2005, 2006, 2010 Palmer, 2006 Historical plus 2006 & 2010 Alter Ego.
