Chateau Biac

Chateau Biac

It all began in 2006, when the Asseily family were captivated by the charm of then-neglected Chateau Biac. They call themselves ‘accidental’ winemakers. You might say their decision to throw over their lives and go to Bordeaux to make wine was impulsive. But the amount of work they have put in, the seriousness which they have undertaken it, and the sheer gusto with which they have thrown themselves up a forbiddingly steep learning curve are a wonder to behold. And all this work and all the learning are bearing fruit in the soaring quality of the wines.

Biac is a remarkable place. When so much of Bordeaux is so flat, it’s a shock to find yourself going up the very steep approach road to the chateau. The vineyards swoop scenically down towards a meander in the River Garonne. It feels like one is at the highest spot for miles around. The soils are a diverse patchwork with a complexity more akin to what one expects in Burgundy than Bordeaux. No wonder the chateau had such a historically high reputation. And the Asseilys are doing everything in their power to restore it to its rightful renown. (NT 17/05/19)
