Vignes de la Famille Tawse
The Beaune premier cru Clos du Roi is at the north end of Beaune, just across from the Savigny border. Half of the Tawse vines are 90 years old, and the other half are 50, so there is some serious vine age here. The wine comes across as cool, restrained and elegant, with soft tannins and a real stony character underlying the red fruit. The 30% new oak is well-integrated. (NT 18/12/24)

The 2023 Beaune Clos du Roi 1er Cru feels a little diffuse on the nose, with Morello cherries and strawberry aromas, but it needs more cohesion. The palate is light and straightforward, perhaps too simple for a Clos du Roi, with a dash of pepper on the finish. Drink this over the next four to six years. 86-88 points

Picked 9th September, at the start of their harvest, destemmed, 30% new wood. The crimson side of ruby. Slightly cooked strawberry, one of the softer fruit wines. Attractive soft strawberry to finish. 89-91 points
