From a vineyard just above the St-Aubin hamlet of Gamay. Montceau is the lowest part of the Les Champlots vineyard, and Marc Colin is the only domaine to bottle Montceau under that name. In a very limey style, and unlike the other 2023s at Marc Colin there is no hint of richness – it’s very lifted and intense, with a flinty mid-palate and a long, saline finish. It is immediately obvious this is from a very distinguished terroir. Damien notes it can be backward, slow to fruit and ripen, but performs very well in warmer years. Unlike many sites in St-Aubin, this plot was never planted to Pinot Noir. As the vines never had to be replanted to Chardonnay, they are some of the domaine’s oldest, and clock in at the age of 60. A particular favourite at Domaine Marc Colin, En Montceau faces south-west with a strong marl content in the soil. The bouquet offers a touch of gunflint or graphite without being overly reductive Slightly saline, En Montceau will be a keeper. 91-93 points
