2021 Jim Barry The Florita Riesling

Clare Valley
Florita (Spanish for ‘little flower’) comes from a famous Clare Valley Riesling vineyard, south of Clare township, in the tiny village of Watervale. Florita was planted to Palomino in 1946 for making `Fino Sherry` (or the Australian version thereof), but was replanted to Riesling in 1962. It was also the birthplace of the Leo Buring Watervale Riesling, and where Australian wine legend John Vickery sourced grapes for his great Watervale Rieslings of the 1960s and 1970s. Jim Barry acquired the vineyard in 1986. The Barry Florita Riesling is made from grapes hand-selected from individual rows. Its best fruit comes from vines planted in shallow loamy soils, and the vineyard has good air-drainage which alleviates the risk of frost. Both precise and intense, it is widely regarded as among Australia`s finest Rieslings. (NT 03/07/22)

2021 Jim Barry The Florita Riesling

Tasted at the Armagh Hut with Sam and Tom Barry, the 2021 The Florita Riesling is tight and compressed: this is growing/evolving in the bottle already, showing lavender, lemon zest, layers of brine, red apples and plenty of spice. It is more compressed than the 2022 but showing more development. Duh. Super long. The 2021 vintage was cool and good. Everyone was very happy with that. This was cut from the same cloth as the 2022 vintage, but perhaps the resultant wines didn’t have the depth of fruit power as 2022. There was little bit of rain (about a millimeter) before picking, so they had to work a little harder with the fruit picking. And it was bit warmer than 2022. 97 points
