Usually when we run comparative tastings, a consensus emerges about the favourite wine(s). But that wasn't the case at our Champagne tasting on August 6th, where we pitched the non-vintage and vintage wines from each of six different producers against each other. Neither Billecart, Pol Roger nor Bollinger got the upper hand among the well-known houses, while there were strong takers for the floral Gosset, the 100% Chardonnay Mesnil and the malty, chocolatey Roederer. Some tasters were entirely taken with the vintage Champagnes, while others were impressed by how well the NVs showed. Personally, I was surprised to discover that the Champagnes I most enjoyed as NVs were not necessarily the ones I liked most when the vintage expression came along.
