Chateau Goubau: one of Bordeaux’s highest achievements

12 Jul 2018

Merlot richness; Bordeaux freshness

The last vintage under this name, the 2015 Chateau Goubau represents the best value in Bordeaux that we've seen for a while: the 2015 is the same price as the 14 and you can't say that about many Bordeaux. 95% Merlot, Goubau has been farmed organically for years by its eponymous Belgian former owners. It has always benefited from low yields and has great intensity. The estate was bought by Bordeaux's Jacques Thienpont just after the harvest in 2015 and he has been responsible for raising and finishing the wines.

Goubau sits on one of the most advantageous (and at 100m the highest) sites on the right bank. For instance it completely escaped the devasting frosts in both 2016 and 17. This aspect is one of the reasons that organics works so well here. As the plateau is exposed everything dries quickly after rain and there is much less need to treat against rot. The Goubau family always wanted to respect the environment and living among the vines were very keen that the use of chemicals was virtually eliminated. And this part of Castillon isn't a monoculture. Sharing the limestone plateau are woods and pasture land.

Goubau has consistently received great feedback from customers, many of whom have bought loads of the 2014. They've loved the rich, plummy fruit and intelligent oak-aging. We're delighted to be able to offer the wine from the stunning 2015 vintage and to add La Source - the impressive second wine - in this vintage. La Source can be enjoyed over the next five years, Chateau Goubau will develop beautifully over the next ten years. It is a fabulous addition to your cellar.

As an extra treat we'll have these two on tasting tomorrow. /CW
