And a vintage change of tempo
Spring frost is a rare occurrence in Cornas, but in April 2021 the pitted, complex slope above the town of Cornas turned white with frosted vines. After the long run of hot vintages going back to 2015, the mild, rainy season that followed marked a real change of tempo. It is in vintages like these, says Vincent Paris, that great vineyards really show their pedigree. '2021 is a fine example of the greatness of Cornas and even more so of La Geynale'.
It isn't just about great vineyards, though. It also needs the hands of a great winemaker - like Vincent Paris. Vincent is a quiet, modest chap and would never say that about himself, but he has proven it time and again. His wines give fabulous expression to the old vine sites he inherited from his grandfather, and others he has cannily acquired by himself. He is now widely regarded as one of the great producers of the northern Rhone.
Vincent's 2021s are fresh and beautifully appealing, all clocking in at a restrained 13% alcohol. The St Joseph Les Cotes is fragrant, pure and crunchy. Granit 30 has more depth, with layers of fresh, juicy fruit. Granit 60 is beefy, rich and rugged, with a big tannic structure; Vincent suggests it needs 5 years to round out. La Geynale is powerful and backward, deep in tannins but profoundly elegant. /NT
