2012 Pontet-Canet, Feytit-Clinet, Haut-Bailly

2 May 2013

Cellar at La Mission Haut-BrionThree big Uncorked favourites today, among a flurry of action in Bordeaux. Jeremy Chasseuil has been steering Feytit-Clinet on an upward path. The 2012 is the most impressive young vintage we've tasted here, and has garnered universal praise from the critics. I can't think that there will be a better buy in Pomerol this year.

'Malolactic fermentation takes place in barrel, which gives the wine a sexy, up-front, well-integrated wood component to accompany its black raspberry, black currant and flowery notes. The wine possesses remarkable intensity, a full-bodied richness and terrific purity. It appears to be one of the superstars of the vintage. Drink it over the next 10-15 years. 93-95 points.' - Robert Parker, erobertparker.com

Alfred Tesseron told us that he aims to set his release price at a level which makes buyers regret they didn't buy more. He then served us the 2002 vintage which certainly made us wish we had it in our cellars. He is wise and charming and can seemingly do no wrong. This is a supremely elegant Pontet-Canet which should be absolutely delicious by the end of this decade and well into the next.

Haut-Bailly is one of a trio of superstars from Léognan. It will be fascinating to compare its evolution to archrivals Domaine de Chevalier and Smith-Haut-Lafitte, all of which have performed strongly in 2012.

From Pessac, we have several commentators' wine of the vintage, Haut-Brion, and all of the other wines from Domaine Clarence Dillon, plus their new St-Emilion, Quintus. Also from St-Emilion are Count Stephan von Neipperg's three excellent properties. /AR
