2011 Burgundy en primeur: Puligny & St-Aubin

16 Jan 2013

Damien Colin from Domaine Marc ColinMarc Colin, Domaine Leflaive

The smallest of the Cote de Beaune villages, Puligny-Montrachet has an influence on the white wines of the region far bigger than the volume of wines produced, even though much of the wine from the village is commercialised by non-natives (hence Jean-Marc Boillot and Joseph Drouhin support this meagre offering). It is much more focussed on white than any of the other Cote de Beaune villages too. St-Aubin is a less fashionable commune producing finer and finer whites and reds, in fact some of the best value wines in the region come from here.

Every year the wines of Domaine Marc Colin get better and better as Damien gets more comfortable with the running of the domaine. Tasting across the board revealed wines bursting with energy, showing the fruit and giving a very open impression of what is to come. It's a real pleasure tasting here now because of the obvious quality and spring that both wines and vignerons have.

Domaine Leflaive's wines are as austere and structured as you would hope and this augurs well for the future. Restrained and mineral, this biodynamic estate has made another suite of grown up wines for the patient. White wines of your dreams. /CW
