2007 Quintarelli Valpolicella Classico
'... The true standout vintage for Amarone and Valpolicella is 2007, by far the best vintage in recent memory and one that will go down as one of the all-time greats.' - Ian d'Agata, vinous.com, March 2012
Combining the amazing art, craft and judgement of Giuseppe Quintarelli with a vintage like 2007 and you'll taste something quite extraordinary. This wil be a wine to enjoy now but also to age and to follow on its journey over the next ten or so years. Quintarelli's Valpolicellas are not like anyone else's. They manage to carry a depth and complexity that few manage, and in a traditional framework that nobody else can match. The mix of terroir, grape varieties and different woods in the cellar all slowly combined under Giuseppe's watch to make a wine of incredible distinction. Sadly he died in 2012, but his wines appeared so late (he was famously reluctant to part with them at all) that we still have releases from his magical cellar.
Why is this stuff so special and almost uniquely make your writer lose any sense of proportion? It is all of the above, of course, but Giuseppe's core skill for me was his ability to raise wines from the time of fermentation through the long and intricate period of maturation in wood. The timing, the blending, the choice of barrel and finally when to bottle all have a strong influence on the contents of these simple bottles with their distinctive labels. Still at the height of his powers when he grew and raised this wine, he perfectly leveraged the vintage conditions to produce this masterpiece. /CW
