2023 Henri Gouges Nuits-St-Georges Vaucrains

Domaine Gouges
The name ‘Vaucrains’ derives from ‘vaux-rien’, or low worth, due to the low yields typical of the vineyard, and its stony, shallow soils where not much but vines or bushes could grow. It is the steep, up-slope continuation of Les St-Georges. The domaine’s parcel of vines lie mid-slope. Where Les St-Georges can be sweet and succulent, Vaucrains will be more mineral. Gouges have to some extent tamed the very powerful, strict tannins also typical of the site with very gentle winemaking practices – Antoine says that infusion (rather than more forceful extraction) and the gentler tannins that come about through a gravity-fed approach in the winery have made this cuvee much more approachable when young than it used to be. There’s a lovely sweetness to the fruit, but also a stony complexity. Finely textured, and will still very much reward aging. (NT 17/12/24)

The 2023 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Vaucrains 1er Cru was showing a little reduction on the nose. It has a mixture of red and black fruit underneath, with hints of violet coming through with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm tannins and a touch of licorice toward the dense finish, with black pepper lingering on the aftertaste. Fine. 92 points

To rack in December. A fine even bright deep ruby purple. Immediate classy on the nose from this great terroir. Not hugely open, but very fine, and this continues on the palate. A sense of refinement despite the level of energy, with the fruit on the perfect cusp between red and black. You can feel the mother rock close to the surface. Impeccable length and texture. 94-96 points
