When discussing wines from here, the thought process often goes. Israeli, Kosher, yuk. Anyone who has had the misfortune to taste any of the Palwin range will be doubly so affected. Those wines are `mevushal`, which is kosher plus cooking - not guaranteed to increase quality. Many products are kosher and we don`t notice, for example Coca Cola. Ok, not a great example when we`re talking quality, but you get my point. The Israeli wine industry is emerging from obscurity and moving away from its traditional market to compete in the wider world. Clos de Gat, one of the top five wineries in the country is making an increasing range of very good wines; not cooked, but very drinkable. This Merlot has proper plummy fruit and a touch of spice and would be excellent with lamb or kid. (CW 01/09/2008)
