Whisky - the water of life, as expressed in the wilds of Scotland and Ireland - can be one of the most complex and interesting drinks available. In terms of character, some of it has definite terroir, but much of it is determined by maturation and age, as well as distillery nuances and positioning.
On Thursday next week, we are going to nose and taste a range of whiskies from the main areas of Scotland, as well as a bourbon and an Irish whiskey - to celebrate their day and patron saint. Except for the bourbon, all the whiskies on tasting are small production, single cask examples from independent bottling specialists Dewar Rattray. These truly are some of the finest, most interesting spirits available, bottled in very limited quantities. The accompanying food has been especially chosen to match the spirit and will of course include smoked salmon - locally sourced from Ole Hansen, of Hansen & Lydersen.
We're confident you will go away with a deepened knowledge of this much misunderstood part of the drinks list and a healthy glow with which to continue the evening's festivities, should you so desire. /CW
