Noon: Australia's most wanted

Noon winery Mclaren Vale

Latest releases from one of Australia's original garagiste wineries

Noon wines are not easy to come by. Since David Noon founded the winery in 1976 (which is now run by his son, Drew) they have managed a small operation from a winery that doubles as their home.  Every year the wines are sold through a mailing list which is now closed; there is a waiting list, but you'll be waiting a long time. If you do happen to be down in the McLaren Vale on the first weekend of November when the family open the cellar you can wait some more whilst queueing in hope they'll sell you a couple of bottles (while stocks last!) - otherwise, your options are pretty limited.

So we are delighted to have secured a small extra parcel of Noon this vintage. These are intense, rich, generous and well-structured reds, only made when the vintage is of high enough quality. They come from low yielding, hand-harvested bush vines which predate the era of vineyard mechanisation and, in an area where there is no phylloxera, are on ungrafted rootstock. These old bush vines look somewhat wild in an area where they are surrounded by vineyards full of well-trained, properly lined-up young, modern vines.

2013 brought a warm summer relieved by early rains and a late, welcome cool spell before a relatively early harvest. Eclipse is the signature red, 80% Grenache, the rest made up of Shiraz and Graciano, all from the Winery Block and Almond Block vineyards in McLaren Vale. The Reserve Shiraz is made from fruit from a single vineyard, the 20 Rows Block in Langhorne Creek.  There is no Reserve Cabernet this year as the Noons felt the tannin structure in the Cabernet didn't quite meet their very exacting standards. /NT
