Capability Laurence

'When it comes to traditional Châteauneuf du Pape, no one does it better than Domaine du Pégau's Laurence and her father Paul Feraud. As I've said in the past, it's almost impossible to have too much Pégau in the cellar!' - Jeb Dunnuck, robertparker.com

In 2015 Laurence has made superb wines from a vintage she loves. She considers the fruit she brought into the winery in 2015 to be perfect, some of the best she has worked with over the years. The balance, the freshness and the intensity are all there and the complexity and age-worthiness she seeks are characteristics of the 2015 growing season.

At Domaine du Pégau the pace is both frenetic and tranquil. Laurence Feraud drives the estate with her foot to the floor, constantly looking for new projects and searching for ways to improve her wines, and when life in the vineyard is quiet you'll find her on a plane. Her abilities and her appetite for work are legendary. Yet this is one of the most traditional estates in the village. None of the red wines is destemmed, cellar work is slow and - for her - relaxed. Long ageing is the rule and Laurence withdrew from the en primeur circus a while ago.

To explain the hierarchy of her wines, Cuvée Reservée is the Tradition and Laurence makes this every year. Cuvée Laurence gets almost four years in cask before blending and is made for those who want to drink mature Chateauneuf without waiting. It has depth and complexity built in. Cuvée da Capo is only released from absolutely the best years and there's only one barrel. Quantity is minute and quality is extraordinary. /CW
