Green and lush, Ribeiro defies many of the stereotypes of Spain. The river valleys of this inland area of Galicia (east of the Rias Baixas, just north of Portugal) are a treasure trove of local grape varieties which barely escape the area's boundaries. One will occasionally break out; Albariño is well known, and a few years ago Godello caused a bit of a stir. But mostly they do not trouble the international wine markets.

The bodega is a small, third-generation winery in the Galician municipality of A Arnoia, currently managed by father and son Jose and Mauro. Their vineyards are small parcels in a variety of aspects on the slopes of the two river valleys that meet in the town, on a mixture of granite and clay soils. With only 2.5 hectares of vines, they know every nuance, and it shows in this wine. /NT
