Drouhin Montrachet Laguiche

"Stands shoulder to shoulder with some of the finest growers" - Neal Martin, eRobertparker.com

As a general rule, one should never turn down an opportunity to spend some time with a vertical of Montrachet. We were lucky enough recently to attend a tasting of back vintages of Joseph Drouhin Montrachet Marquis de Laguiche at The Connaught and it was evident that Drouhin have been ratcheting up the quality of this wine over the years. Neal Martin was also at the tasting and in his recap noted that "as you move towards the more recent vintages the quality steadily improves, the wine achieving greater clarity and mineralité, especially with respect to the Montrachet 2008 and 2009." What's more, these wines are priced in an altogether different division from some of its rivals - you can literally own a dozen bottles of it for the price of one bottle from DRC or Leflaive! Neal also pointed out a unique leg-up: with approximately thirty-four barrels each vintage, Veronique Drouhin is able to reject between two and four barrels that aren't up to snuff - a luxury of which producers with smaller holdings can only dream.

The best value examples of the world's finest white wine? We think so. /CC
